Online Classes – Info and T&Cs

To ensure that we can run fun and safe sessions, please keep the following in mind;

  • Please ensure that you have sufficient space, free of obstacles and with enough room to move without physical contact with each other.
  • Please avoid working out on hard or slippery floors.
  • All participants must be members of British Taekwondo. Non-members can take a taster class but if they are continuing they will need to register for British Taekwondo Family and Friends Membership. To do, just send us an email and we will help you register. By joining these sessions you are participating at your own risk.
  • Please do not join the classes if you are ill or injured. Rest! There will be plenty of other opportunities to train and we want you to stay safe and well.

Classes are delivered live on Zoom. Zoom is a free, easy to use video call app available to use on laptops, tablets and smartphones.

During the classes your microphone will be muted to avoid background noise. When you join please ensure that your camera is on as it will allow us to provide feedback, This is also an insurance requirement for us to run these sessions. The sessions are also recorded for insurance purposes which includes a record of your attendance. These recording will be retained for 36 months.

We are using the chat facility on Zoom for questions and the instructor leading each session will allow a couple of minutes at the end of each session to answer these questions.

We also have also have a specific private Facebook group (DTA – Homelearning) for this online training programme which can be found at https://www.facebook.com/groups/1113597895655537/learning_content/ (this is a private group so you will need to request to join).

We are using this closed Facebook group to provide updates on the classes, details on what we will be focusing on during the coming week’s classes as well as for polling on how we might develop and extend this programme. We will also continue to share key information through club’s normal email lists and Facebook page, but this homelearning group is used for more detailed information and for the instructors to get feedback and poll for opinions from those actively involved with the online classes.

To keep inline with British Taekwondo’s policy on Safeguarding we can only accept memberships in this private group from adults. Therefore if you are a junior who is registered for online classes under your own email address please pass this invitation onto a parent or guardian. We do want to ensure all our members, older and younger, are fully part of our online programme but the security and safety of our juniors must be the key concern.

If you have any other questions please just send us an email.

We look forward to see you online very soon.

Dorset Taekwondo Assc Awarded ‘clubmark’

Dorset Taekwondo Association is proud to announce it has just been granted (November 2019) the nationally recognised Clubmark award. To achieve this Sport England accreditation our standards of coaching, safety, fairness, safeguarding and management were all externally assessed and we have been found to be a well-run club.

Our assessor was particularly impressed when he visited a training session stating there was a “confidence and supportive atmosphere”, “excellent inclusion” and a “positive and safe environment for the activities of the club to take place”

Clubs awarded Clubmark can be very proud of what they have achieved. This has only been made possible through all the hard work and dedication of its Chief instructor, management, coaches, volunteers, students and all members. Clubmark awarded clubs demonstrate a commitment to developing junior sport. It means parents can be assured that their children belong to a safer club. Members can be sure their club is a well-managed club, striving to offer the best in coaching and sports development.

This Nationally recognised Sport England Accreditation has been the culmination of many hours work over the 2019. Policies and Procedures have been reviewed and rewritten. A special mention to DTA coach Paul Western who literally had sleepless nights in the run up to the audit.

Development Pathways (re)Explained

Following on from our successful end of year presentation, it became very obvious that most of the parents, and some of the members, did not understand the clubs Development Pathways.

The Development pathways were launched in 2016 after looking at this model in other sports. It became obvious that many students enjoyed a particular aspect of Taekwondo and could better develop their skills in classes that focused particularly on that area. Whilst CORE classes focus on all aspect of Taekwondo, and will develop a well rounded athlete capable of all aspects of modern Taekwondo, the DEVELOPMENT PATHWAYS allow them to specialize.

Members of Dorset Taekwondo are encouraged to try one or more of the Development Pathways after they have been training in the CORE classes for approximately 9-12 months.

  • CORE CLASSES – training in all areas of modern Taekwondo. Participants learn general Taekwondo skills so they can progress through the Kup / coloured belt grading syllabus. These classes are fun, varied, and engaging. (Development Pathways alone are not sufficient to progress through the belt syllabus).
  • PATTERNS (POOMSAE) DEVELOPMENT PATHWAY – these classes focus on improving poomsae with the goal being to compete in Poomsae competition. They focus on “accuracy” and “presentation”. Poomsae is a large aspect of the coloured belt grading syllabus and therefore attendance at these classes complements the core classes. These classes replace the CORE classes during the last week of each calendar month (Dates for 2018 here). Additional Poomsae classes at other clubs, with the British team, and seminars with visiting specialist instructors are organised throughout the year on an ad-hoc basis.
  • SPORT DEVELOPMENT PATHWAY – the focus of these classes is exercises and preparation towards Olympic style fighting competition. The class is not a “fight class”, and sparring is only one of the many exercises in these classes. Your own protective equipment is required. This Pathway has access to Electronic Scoring equipment purchased by the club as it is used in most competitions on the national circuit. These Sports Development Pathway classes meat three times a week.
  • DEMO DEVELOPMENT PATHWAY – these classes are run by our Demonstration Team known as the Dorset Taekwondo Tigers. The team focuses on dynamic / gymnastic exercises, boards and brick breaking, and even dance! The display team regularly perform throughout the summer and autumn at fairs, festivals and fetes etc.. The team meet seasonally on sundays from Easter until Christmas.

The pathway classes ARE OPEN TO ALL members of Dorset Taekwondo Association. You do not have to be invited, you can just go along. Its Courteous to speak to the coach at these sessions before going along, and speak to your core class coach if you will be attending less core classes.  If you have no previous martial arts experience it is anticipated that you will have been training for approximately +9 months before trying the Development Pathways class(es). This is so you have sufficiently prepared your general skills and conditioning. The development pathways are not suitable for complete beginners.

A weekly Schedule showing times and locations of all classes can be found HERE

Grading Test

Grading Tests are conducted every 3 months. Candidates can work through the coloured belt system. Successful candidates are awarded a Nationally Recognised British Taekwondo Certificate.

The grading test examining board consists of qualified and approved Instructors. It also usually contains an independent Master Instructor from outside of Dorset Taekwondo Association.

Equipment Price List

Please find below a price list for protective equipment and uniforms.

Dorset Taekwondo Association has managed to negotiate better prices for equipment recently. As a result the prices have actually now gone down since 2014! Whilst you may be able to purchase slightly cheaper equipment if you shop around on the internet we stringly recommend you purchase through the club as we only sell quality equipment that is approved for WTF competition. (Not all brands are approved for competition, and you will not be permitted to use unapproved equipment for sparring)

Whilst we can lend some equipment to students, Protective equipment is required for grading test from Green Belts (6th Kup) and above.
