New / amended Classes and Pathways (IMPORTANT)

New Classes and Development Pathways

The instructors, coaches and committee of Dorset Taekwondo met recently to agree some important changes to our class structure. This is undoubtedly the biggest shake up for Dorset Taekwondo classes in several years. The clubs are going from strength to strength and we feel it is time to change a few things to allow you to reach your full potential.

It is important to note that all the classes listed are part of Dorset Taekwondo Association. Whilst many people get used to training with just one instructor, you can increase your skills, knowledge and understanding of Taekwondo by training with other instructors within our Association. You may notice that some of the classes are on at the same time, which is not ideal. However, all instructors understand that you might want to stick where you are, or try training with another instructor within our group.  It is for you to decide which is best for you.

The prices / costs of the classes have been aligned and there is no need to pay additional fees for the new classes – they are included in your monthly payment, or at the same price as your usual Pay-as-you-go fee.

Pathways Explained

Following the structure of many other sports, we are introducing the concept of ‘Core’, ‘Development’, and ‘High Performance’ pathways. As you can see from the attached you can carry on with your normal classes largely unaffected as the ‘Core’ lessons have not changed in day, time or location. However, if you choose, you can try some of our structured pathway classes.

  • Core’  classes cover all aspects of Taekwondo and are suitable for all grades from beginner to Master who want to enjoy fun structured lessons and work through the Belt system.
  • Development’ classes are specialist classes with particular themes working towards goals i.e. competitions & demonstrations.
  • High Performance’ classes are for squad members who are representing Dorset Taekwondo Association in competition. High Performance classes are generally by invitation only.

I hope you will support the concept and utilise the new classes to improve yourself. If you have any questions please do not hesitate to ask.

TKD Frequently asked Questions

Who is Taekwondo Suitable for?

Taekwondo is suitable for most people.
What age are the participants?

In Dorset Taekwondo Association we generally have students between the age of 8 and 60. The earliest starting age is generally 8 years old, but this does depend upon the individuals concentration span.
What is the lesson format?

Lesson format varies according to the standard of the participants. However, it will always include a cardiovascular warm up & stretching exercises. Often the class will then be split into groups and activities according to ability.
What should I wear?

Until you purchase a uniform (dobok) please wear loose fitting cloths such as a t-shirt and track suit bottoms. Normally we train in bare feet.
Do I need to be fit?

Most people take up martial arts to get fit. However, you will need to be able to do gentle-light exercise in order to participate. If you have any medical conditions that inhibit you exercising you might still be able to take part but should discuss this with the instructor before the start of the class.

Aching muscles from stretching are usual after the first few lessons. Over enthusiasm is often a problem. Don’t be tempted to try too hard to start with. You won’t be encouraged / pushed for a few weeks, know your own limits.

Might I get hurt?

Taekwondo is a martial art based on principles of combat. It is a Full contact Martial Art. Fighting is optional and students only need to be able to demonstrate the ability to fight, and don’t actually need to fight to pass tests etc.. However, some physical contact is inherent in this type of activity.

Like any sport there is an element of risk in participating. Muscle strains, bumps and bruises are not common but do happen. Statistically there are more injuries in a game of football than participating in a Taekwondo class.

How Much will it cost?

The same as starting any new sport there are a few costs involved, but once you have got started the costs are relatively low.

After your first FREE trial 2 lessons (Click here to open – New Starter FREE Lesson Voucher) the costs are as follows:-

1. Lessons are £4 or £5 (depending upon venue) on a pay-as-you-go basis. (Cheaper pay monthly options available).
2. All members are required to get a Annual British Taekwondo  Membership which currently cost £30 per year.

Other optional costs include

3. A good quality uniform which costs from £20 depending upon size and brand.
4. Grading tests are held 4 times a year.
5. Protective Equipment (required from green tag and above)
