Students (Paris / Akvile & Immi) from Dorset Taekwondo attended the Student Championships on 19th November 2017, Jean Brown Indoor Arena, North East London.
This was the first Student competition we had attended for a few years. However, the university circuit is getting a little more organised and since the competition wasn’t to far away we thought we would give it a try.
There ware nearly 300 competitors, adults only, split into A, B and C class according to their grade. Our three were all competing in A class which was interesting as it was on a different electronic scoring body and head protection system to what we are used to. This system was KP&P, rather than the Daedo which the club has and trains with. There is little difference, although different sensor socks were required (£50 for a pair – gulp). The KP&P system seemed a little better. it was easier to score with a turning kick, and never lost wireless connection during a match.
All the team won their first round matches. Ackvile and Paris winning by referee stopping contest. Ackvile was to strong for her shorter opponent; Paris took a little time to find her range, and then started scoring her now famous front hook kicks from close range. Immi had a tough opening match but went onto win on points.
Unfortunately (for the club), Paris and Immi met each other in the final. In this no holds barred match it went to golden point. Immi worked out how to cover Paris hook kick and scored underneath to take gold.
Akvile had an interesting final. Her opponent was kicked to the face by Akvile a couple of times and threw in the towel. Gold.
Massive Congratulations to Immi Hand and Akvile Janavicute for their Golds, and Parastoo Karimi for her Silver! Onwards to more university competitions, the BT Nationals, and The University nationals.
As always, it was a club effort with Laila Arbane, Lucy Lawrence volunteer judges for the day. Marcin Swedrzynski coached the players to victory, and Master Darren Naraine providing ongoing support and reffing!
